This hasn’t been properly announced yet. You’re the first…
You know those Wi-Fi networks which you log onto and have to enter your email address to get online? I’ve launched my own in East London. It’s called ‘FREE Hackney Wifi’.
This is what you see when you join the network:
When people submit their drawing - they get access to the internet and crack on with their lives.
MEANWHILE:
Their drawing is analysed. Based on what it looks like, it’s given an arty title and description. i.e. a wonky circle becomes Compressed Geometry in Repose, 2026. A stick figure becomes a meditation on line, presence, and negative space.
The works are then exhibited at wifartgallery.com - a free online gallery that takes itself very seriously.
The first submission:
After weeks of technical setup, I opened the network to the public and waited for the first submission. I was half expecting a range of shlongs, but I was pleasantly surprised:
It actually works.
Whilst I continued to work on the gallery’s website and ironed out some technical kinks, I kept receiving more submissions. Some were quick squiggles, others were actually really good drawings. I get a notification each time one lands and I can’t wait to see what it’s going to be. It’s the only notification on my phone that’s not turned off.
I love the fact that something as mundane as connecting to a wifi network is getting people to draw. Maybe some of the people haven’t drawn in years. And whatever they submit - it’s celebrated. That’s pretty cool right?
Next steps and 3 ways you can help
All of this work is nothing without a bit of a push. My marketing budget is essentially nothing so your help is appreciated…
1. Know any relevant journos?
They can cover topics like design, art, digital or London. Maybe itsnicethat.com, Wired, or the Evening Standard.
—> Please send them over
2. Become a ‘Gallery Patron’
Imagine your smugness. It’s the holy grail of eyebrow-raising self-satisfaction. I can already hear you bragging to your mates (plus you get a print mailed to you every month)
—> Check out the options
3. Follow the gallery
I’ve just launched the gallery’s Instagram. It will post submissions and news in a deadpan manner.
—> Give it a follow.
I thank you kindly x

What a fabulous idea! 🙌
